The Sfat Emet explains the three terms of “And if you will walk in My statures and keep my mitzvot and do them” (Vayikra 26:3) as corresponding to thought, speech and deed. These three allude to the three worlds of which each Jew has a portion and each is rectified by means of the mitzvot. When we think, speak and act upon the mitzvot with all of our mind, heart and soul we repair the physical and spiritual limbs of our being.

This gives great pleasure to Hashem particularly because we are commanded to do so and we accepted it as an obligation. As at Mount Sinai when the Jewish Nation accepted the Torah Hashem gave us two crowns for accepting the mitzvot whatever they may be – we shall do and we shall listen.

Feel and heal exercise:

Put your right hand over your forehead and your left hand over your heart and feel your thoughts move to your heart through your hand with the intention to move the knowledge of Hashem’s everlasting presence into your heart (move that which you know into your heart).

Just mentioning His Name

The Yesod V’Shoresh HaAvoda writes that Hashem’s 4 letter name is the basis of all the other Names; all of the Names, spheres, worlds and chariots on every plane of existence; they are held, arranged and carried by It. When His name is merely mentioned  there is a shaking throughout the Heavens and Earth literally throughout the universe.

According to the Vilna Gaon ztk’l we should take precaution when we mention His awesome name since Hashem considers Himself hidden and is revealed through His creation. We must be fully conscious of the revelation of His presence as much as possible and therefore pay extra attention when mentioning His name.

Feel and heal exercise:

Pay attention, even if just once a day, to the fact that Hashem is with you, right now, right here just by you mentioning His name in a bracha you recite.

Great is Your faithfulness…

How wonderful it is that Hashem gives our souls back to us every morning although we have tainted it since the morning before. G-d keeps offering us chance after chance to repair the previous damage.

In Yaarot Dvash, R’ Yonatan Eibeshutz teaches that we learn how much our hearts must fill with gratitude to G-d when we thank Him every morning for compassionately returning our souls to us. Everyday there are a new set of decrees and yet we proclaim that we trust in G-d that the new decrees will be for the very best.

Feel and heal exercise:

Think about the idea that everyday we get a chance to renew our spirits mentally, emotionally and spiritually … what compassion G-d has for us in enabling a sense of renewal to enter into our lives every morning!

Who’s Packing?

Our reality is constantly changing and helping us to move forward. When you move house, your current home appears on the surface to be in utter chaos, confused and disorganized. However, we can view change as stressful, or we can view it as an exciting opportunity. We shouldn’t fall apart because of this move. Don’t worry about putting things in order or making sense out of the mess.

The apparent chaos signifies that Hashem is changing the world for the better. We can view the change as positive and exciting and adventurous. We are not stagnating but growing. We need to be ready with our packed belongings (mitzvot). In this world we pack – we do. Only in the next world we sit – we have.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

We are constantly moving house, from one household and state of living to another. Think about the ‘in between times’ and what a mess things are until they settle into their firm place. So too it is in our lives – moving, changing and reframing… always on the move to redemption!

Steering us the right way

Though we may lack understanding of why we suffer, pain is not ‘senseless’. Emuna enables us to accept the pain and know intrinsically that somehow, in some way our pain is necessary for our spiritual repair and growth. This awareness and inner faith should help steer us away from assessing our difficulties and judging whether they are good or bad.

One reason why difficulties arise is to remind us of Hashem’s presence and motivate us to change our ways. We should constantly view ourselves and our world as transient – each stage is sending us a new message and leading us to a new phase of life.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Consider the fact that we are like tourists in this world. Hashem is the ultimate tour guide directing and steering us through the valleys and mountains ensuring we make most of the scenary.

Clarity of Oneness

The Chofetz Chaim ztk’l teaches that we are brought down into this world for the sole purpose of rectifying the world through recognition and acceptance of Hashem as the Creator. It is called a clarity of ’Oneness.’ Emuna enables us to dismiss all doubts about Hashem’s existence and the fact that everything that happens to us is for a reason and is for our best.

We are instructed to serve Hashem out of emuna and bitachon – clear knowledge that Hashem is always with us and steadfast trust that helps us act on that security. Doubts are insidious and often interrupt emuna growth. They may arise out of uncertainty over Hashem’s ability to help, or fear of something we believe is greater and more powerful than Hashem. However, Emuna empowers us to hope and trust in Hashem when beset with misfortune.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Close your eyes and visualize the word Echad in Hebrew א – ח – ד. Focus on the idea of Hashem’s unifying presence in the world.

Though each nisayon hurts, we can soften the impact by reminding ourselves that Hashem sends us these challenges to enable us to ‘pay down our debt’ and reach perfection.

The Zohar teaches that we see through the pupil, the black part of our eye. This represents the idea that we ‘see’ and learn through the dark times in life. When he was challenged by his suffering, Iyov asked Hashem ‘Why?’ Hashem replied, “Where were you when I created the world?” Iyov then realized the immeasurable distance between creature and the Creator.

Life is a series of detailed events chained together to form history. A lifetime of 120 years is minuscule compared to eternity. We are not privy to see the whole piece of jewelry. Only when we have reached the end of the chain of events will we be granted the understanding and knowledge of why things happened the way they did.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Hindsight is an exact science.  Look back at the series of events that you have undergone in life and see how you can now connect the dots with more clarity.

Wake up call

The Vilna HaGaon ztk’l teaches that if it were not for yissurim, we would not be able to stand in the next world. Our merits and misdeeds are weighed and our merits are lightened since they are often done with a lack of sincerity and joy. In contrast, our misdeeds are heavy since often they are committed with desire and excitement.

The word yissurim is derived from the word ‘mussar’ (rebuke). Discomfort, challenges and hardships are ‘wake-up’ calls to convey the message that we are currently ‘traveling down the wrong path’. Such wake-up calls are actually a Divine chesed, enabling us the opportunity to pay merely pennies on a one million dollar debt.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Put one hand on your forehead and one hand in the back of your head and calm your thoughts. Think about the path you are traveling towards. What can you change about it to enable more meaning into your life?

Everything is a process

When a Jew leaves this world and fails to repair a transgression via teshuva or yissurim (difficulties, hardships and challenges of life), their sin weighs down the whole of the Klal (community). The Klal then have to rectify the damage caused by that sin. Hashem created this world so it ‘naturally’ continues to perfect itself until the ultimate perfection of Mashiach.

The world must experience ‘birth pangs’ before the coming of Mashiach in order to lessen the burden of these unrepaired sins of the Klal. The entire nation must be cleansed of transgressions before the geula. This process of rectification perfects Jewish souls and brings us closer to Mashiach.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Life is a process – everything happens in stages. Let’s appreciate the unfolding of redemption happening in due time at the right pace. However let’s always yearn for it to happen soon.

We’re all in this together…

Picture an ant working tirelessly to move a grain of dirt in front of her so she can move forward. Her vision is blocked from what lies a foot in front of her. Her load is miniscule compared to the mound of earth piled around a tree stump just a few feet in front of her. And she cannot even fathom the fact that there lies a forest 50 feet ahead of her. She sees and focuses only that which is in front of her. Yet, overcoming her individual challenge is crucial to enabling her to reach that forest along with the other ants.

We may not see the ‘big picture’. Yet, we can be rest assured that there is something bigger and greater out there. We must focus on our individual challenges and victories, trusting that by completing our unique tikkun we are moving towards our final destination. Let’s trust the Divine process. Let’s patiently complete our own tikkun, overcoming our personal nisyonot in order to help usher the geula as it unfolds before our very own eyes.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Think about one particular challenge that you currently face and how so many others are confronting the same thing. The collective power of so many people, in so many distant places accumulates and serves as a powerhouse of energy to eventually help one another overcome it.
