The Heels of Mashiach

The Torah refers to the End of Days Ikveh d’Meshicha, the heels of the Mashiach. The AriZal points out that a heel is a seemingly unimportant part of the body that does not appear to contribute to our higher spiritual or intellectual faculties. The whole body steps on it and it steps on dirt. Nevertheless, the heel is essential since all of our body relies on it and stands on it.

Past generations laid down the groundwork for the upcoming redemption. Our generation is considered to represent the heel of the Mashiach. Our job is to complete the process of preparation for redemption, tying the last loose ends together in order to usher in the Mashiach, B’H.

Feel & Heal Exercise:

Think about the ‘last minute jobs’ needed to be complete just before Shabbat enters. These are the finishing touches that make the Shabbat experience all the more unique. This resembles the time we currently live in.

There is a simple yet proven practice brought down by Rav Chaim m’Volozhin ztk’l that empowers us to live with strong emuna and acceptance. It is founded on the principle that nothing controls our destiny but G-d. Thus Rav Chaim taught that by repeating the words Ein od Milvado (there is none other than Him) and implanting in our heart there is no other force but G-d; we can break free of any encounter that manipulates our connection with Him.

Thus is the power of emuna and bitachon. Fundamentally, emuna is the constant practice of reminding ourselves how much G-d loves and cares for us even if life is not exactly what we hoped for. Talk to G-d, air out your concerns, you may not be granted your requests but you will certainly gain a tremendous feeling of closeness and feel His loving embrace.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Remind yourself today how much G-d loves and cares for you; in fact He loves you like no other!

It’s All Love

Think about it – G-d is watching, caring, protecting, safeguarding and waiting to hear from you at every moment. Rav Tzaddok HaCohen of Lublin ztk’l teaches that a fundamental part of having emuna in G-d is the belief that He is looking out for our ultimate best. It might come out in the form of tough love, but “tough love is also love.”

It is all in the attitude. As we infuse our mind and heart with the understanding that our Creator loves us to no limit, we equip ourselves with the necessary tools to accept all challenges as being for our best. Difficulties should be seen as ‘repairing kits’ that shift our mode of thinking; not as measures to cause us anguish. From here we learn the importance of a positive approach; it is all good, a blessing in disguise.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Think about a time when you needed to say ‘no’ in order for the other to experience a ‘yes’ in their life (a better outcome would come by telling them ‘no’). That is the meaning of tough love, for a better result to arise in its place.

What’s Missing

Often we get disappointed when our requests go unanswered. When a person is left with an unsatisfied desire, they naturally fall into a state of worry, frustration and protest. However, what is really causing this negativity to creep into one’s life? A sense of lacking; ‘There’s something missing.’ When we feel a void we erroneously believe that things are not going ‘as they should.’

An important thing to remember is that G-d fulfills all of our desires, all of our true desires, to the degree that is perfectly fit for us. He knows our size and our fit and gives us what we need according to the ‘size’ of our neshama. A person’s real ratzon and desire is directly linked to that which he really needs; what his soul needs.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Think to yourself: could it be that what you currently want is not good for you or can ultimately lead to a greater challenge?

Desires, desires…

‘Ein k’Ahmcha Yisrael’ – Ahm Yisrael is holy. On the tip of most Jewish tongues, regardless of their Torah observance, or how difficult one’s situation is, the words ‘Baruch Hashem’ is found, words that profess gratitude and emuna. In this merit, Ahm Yisrael experiences bitachon and happiness and are able to cope with life’s challenges.

Emuna refers to trusting in Hashem’s ability to help and guide us through every circumstance; it does not mean that G-d will deliver what we desire. It is important to understand this well; emuna is belief in G-d’s intimate interaction in our lives however not that G-d will fulfill our wants.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Think to yourself “what might be a possible ‘G-dly’ reason for not ‘receiving’ one of my desires that I have been praying for.” Allow yourself to expand your vision on seeing how this may be a positive delay.

The G-dly Master Plan

Accepting and celebrating Plan B teaches us a great emuna lesson. It also helps us work on our middah of hod, submission which is one of the sefirot and G-dly manifestations. Adjusting our expectations and plans takes flexibility, the ability to ‘go with the flow’ of G-d’s will in spite of it being different from our own intentions.

We can still choose to sing along to the new tune, no matter how different from our old one. And then to use an ayin tov, a good eye to see our new tune as perfectly suited to us! Whether it appears to us that life is following plan A, B or Z, ultimately all is ratzon Hashem, the will of G-d and all follows His master plan.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Contemplate the idea that everything is from G-d and G-d is everything. No matter which direction you’re facing, it is still the way G-d wants you to go!

What’s the Plan?

Often, life does not go according to plan A. Indeed, G-d appeared to have had an ‘original plan A’ – that is, for Adam HaRishon to live in Gan Eden and for His name to be known to all. Yet because of Adam’s sin, the world is now living according to plan B (as it appears to us). Yet, this world of Plan B is still called ‘tov me’od (very good)’ as written in Sefer Bereishis (1:31).

When plan A fails we may feel lost, sad or frustration, yearning for the illusive plan A. However, instead we can transform our yearning and excitement for plan A and apply it to plan B. We can strive to accept plan B and view it as tov me’od, just as G-d wants it be right now.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

The ‘could have’s’ and ‘should have’s’ can occupy a good part of our life. But think about it, if it ‘could have’ and ‘should have’ then it ‘would have!’ That pretty much sums up plan A vs. plan B.

Keep the Blessings Coming

Expressing appreciation motivates us to continue to pray with anticipation that the ultimate good will be revealed. We all have friends, relatives and others who support and assist us; B’H we are not alone in this world. Thanking G-d for our loved ones keeps our blessings coming.

If we are stuck for something to thank G-d for, our Sages suggest that we visit a hospital or a cemetery. By comparing ourselves to others in the community who are less fortunate than us, we automatically feel appreciation for what G-d has blessed us. This process of contrasting ourselves with others may minimize the need for G-d to send us intense challenges in order to encourage us to appreciate the beauty of an ordinary day.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

We can increase the magnitude of our blessings by ‘making them bigger’ than we previously perceived them to be. Take one blessing in your life and magnify its value, appreciate it more!

Shed the Layers

Our souls’ true desires are often covered over by the desires of our guf, body. Hitbodedut enables us to shed the layers of the body and some of the genuine desires of the soul begin to surface. For instance, we may begin to feel and access our desire to be righteous and not transgress, to be happy, to live with zest and strength, to increase our emuna, see good in all things and in everyone, a strengthening of self-worth and honor. Above all, this process enables us to truly feel G-d’s constant and intimate presence.

One highly beneficial part of hitbodedut is to utter words of gratitude. This demonstrates our contentment and our firm emuna that G-d does everything for the best and that He listens to our tefillot.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

We are complex beings and as we travel through life we discover many aspects of ourselves we previously were unaware of. Enjoy the rediscovering of yourself as you get to know what lies beneath the layers.

The process of pouring our heartfelt thoughts and feelings to G-d often enables us to feel cherished and uplifted. Rebbe Nachman explains that hitbodedut is meant to be a deep, intimate talk with our Creator in order to reach heart-felt issues that need to be addressed. Chiseling through the fortress surrounding our hearts requires a significant period of regular time to open up and acknowledge our feelings and emotions. He therefore advises us to do one hour of hitbodedut a day in order to reach this deep, penimi place, this deep place within.

One remarkable effect of hitbodedut is the ability to deeply connect to G-d in a close and personal way. This process illuminates our soul. Through emotional discourse – words of praise, appreciation, desire, will, lament, and honest reflection – we are able to bond with our Creator on the deepest level.

Feel and heal exercise of the day:

Gently close your eyes and see the fortress around your heart; we all have one. Whisper words to help open it and see how your heart begins to shine through your heart wall.  Make this part of your daily routine.
