Feeling Secure

We are instructed to serve G-d out of Emuna and Bitachon – clear knowledge that G-d is always with us and steadfast trust that helps us act on that security. Doubts are insidious and often interrupt emuna growth. They may arise out of uncertainty over G-d’s ability to help, or fear of something we believe is greater and more powerful than G-d.

Feel & heal exercise of the day

Gently press the indented area between top lip and nose while taking three deep breaths and say “I fully trust in G-d. I am never alone. He is always taking care of me.”

Unnatural means

There is a remarkable parable that illustrates the importance of trusting only in Hashem and none other.

There once was a man who became fatally ill. The doctors lost all hope yet the man sent for his Rav to advise him of a cure. The Rav advised that he take seven chickens and boil them for seven days to the point where it condenses the liquid to fit into a spoon.

As he poured the liquid into the spoon and was about to drink, a spider fell into it rendering it unfit to drink. His family was horror-struck and anticipated his death to come shortly after. Yet, he began to recover and in a few weeks was completely healed.

When he was asked how he recovered his reply was, “When I realized that I couldn’t drink the liquid and that all means of healing were taken from me, I turned to Hashem and cried from the depths of my heart to send me a complete healing. It is the true Healer Who healed me.” When we remove all faith placed with people, cures and solutions to ease our difficulties and in its place rely purely and simply on Hashem Yitborach, we merit His goodness.

Elevated emuna translates into action; our thoughts, speech and actions are profoundly affected by our emuna. Bitachon is the bridge between that which we know and that which we feel and eventually impacts that which we do. When we remove all faith in ‘natural means’ we essentially unclog the pipeline of Divine goodness and enable it to flow freely into our lives.

The Art of Trust

Do we really believe the geulah is coming?  Trust is an unwavering belief; solid without a shmutz of doubt. When doubt enters trust, it becomes eroded and optimism diluted.

4 possible reasons why trust is painted in doubt:

  • Our trust in only surface deep. When our surroundings present us with an opposing reality our trust changes positions and favors our external senses and leaves behind our inner gut senses.
  • Pain overpowers our trust. Intellect loses strength when emotions are strong. We cannot rationally imagine that a solution is possible and will occur. This is a state of despair.
  • We cannot wait – we become impatient and do not want to hold ground throughout the process. It’s been too long and we do not have the discipline to wait any longer for our troubles to be resolved.
  • Unwillingness to internalize and reflect what’s lying under the difficulty. There is a message and we need to do a self-accounting of what it is.

These are some of the obstacles that lead to doubt and damper our emuna and bitachon. Think about which one you relate to most often.  Remove the doubt and watch your emuna and bitachon blossom.

Genuine Security

Emuna is an innate gift given to every Jew.  The emuna seeds were ‘planted’ during the entire experience of Yetziat Mitzrayim; with every plague another seedling was lovingly planted in our hearts by Hashem, a testimony of His love for us.  We read in the Pesach Hagaddah, “Ani v’lo saraf (It was I {Hashem} and not an angel)” who redeemed you from Mitzrayim; so that we remember that we were and still are personally taken care of by Hashem Himself.

Genuine emuna is a settled intellectual conviction that what Hashem has promised will indeed come to pass.  Borei Olam’s promises of our future are as certain and reliable as though they were being told to us personally right now.  We should be keenly aware of Hashem’s love for us at every given moment.  The word bitachon (trust) is derived from the word betach (secure).  In other words it describes a state of safety, security and certainty, not just intellectually but emotionally.

“Ki karov eilecha hadavar me’od b’ficha u’vilvavecha la’asotoh (For the matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it)” (Devraim 30:11).  Although this particularly refers to our ability to do teshuva, it is a well known teaching that after doing a spiritual accounting we are gifted with incredible closeness to Borei Olam.  The ability to bond to Hashem is very near to us, we need not travel far to access it, as it is warmly planted in our hearts.

Bitachon (trust) is born out of emuna; an inner sense of knowledge and security that nothing is by chance.  No other real assurance exists other than knowing that Hashem’s compassion is available to us 24/7. The Chazon Ish ztk’l teaches that trust does not mean that everything will be as we wish. It is our firm belief that nothing is happenstance and everything is directly supervised by Hashem, a loving Fatherly authority; all is for our ultimate good.

Emuna is a mindset, an intellectual belief that Hashem interacts with every aspect of life. Bitachon on the other hand is the practical attitude and application of this viewpoint (emuna). Bitachon affects our decisions and emotions. With bitachon we live life feeling secure and assured that we are not alone.

That is our task in life- to constantly fortify our emuna and bitachon no matter how difficult the experience we face. Measure for measure as we work to increase our emuna Hashem’s boundless compassion becomes more revealed. The Chazon Ish writes in ‘Emunah and Bitachon’ that a person who works on uplifting her emuna will clearly be shown Hashem’s ‘personal involvement’ in her life.  Bitachon which leads to inner serenity will surely follow.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated and sponsored to the refuah shleimah of Tsipora Sara bas Basya Meira. May Hashem send her a complete healing b’ruit hanefesh v’briut haguf among all of Klal Yisrael who are sick and suffering b’karov, b’rachamaim, Amen.
