A Whole without Holes

Those of us who abandon the painful aspects of their personality in an attempt to run away will often live in a state of sadness. If we do not accepted all the parts of ourselves, we cannot face the reality of who we really are. And consequently we cannot set a realistic goal for who we want to be!

There are great holes in the view we have of ourselves since we in effect leave out parts of our own essence we wish not to confront. Though we may initially be able to hide our imperfections and minimize discomfort in the short term, they remain there and clamor more loudly to be dealt with as time passes.

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:
Name one thing you have consistantly been repressing. Choose to take a peak at it and begin the journey of correction.

Our Traveling Path

It can be challenging to see beyond our human senses and have expansive, spiritual vision. One of the most difficult areas to do so is with ourselves. Though the Jewish people are not perfect, we are travelling towards yet they are on the road to perfection. And that is perfect because that is how Hashem wants it.

Human beings tend to run away from discomfort and pain. It can be uncomfortable and painful to confront our negative character traits and weaknesses. Thus, we often ignore or avoid them. However, the Torah requires us to face and accept our weaknesses and sins in order to do teshuva and repair the blemishes of our soul. This is the whole point of our journey in this World!

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:

However painful it is, today make an effort to look at a painful part of yourself and begin the journey of repair.

The True Reason

Before a soul descends down into the world, it is presented with the true reason for coming to this lowly world and what it is meant to achieve here.

For instance, a particular soul may need to correct a past tendency to see G-d as unjust and to work on having emuna in G-d despite challenges. This soul might have been sent into this World precisely to face such challenges, giving it an opportunity to rectify this error.

The only way this soul may rectify this problem and complete its repair is by being placed in seemingly unfair situations which give it an opportunity to overcome its natural tendency to feel things are unjust. Only through such an experience is it able to correct the main reason why it is here and earn its place in the next World. Thus, we see that G-d plans every detail to be in exact accordance to what our souls need.

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:

Think of an aspect of your life that reappears often and dig deep to understand what is your calling – what needs to be repaired?

Upside Down Understanding

UPSIDE DOWN UNDERSTANDING

The way we interpret life’s events has a tremendous impact on emotional wellness. Our emotional health is linked not to the circumstances that happen to us but rather to our perception of those experiences. As we travel on our emuna trail, we may understand intellectually that all that G-d does is for our very best. Yet, when we experience the inevitable bumps and bruises of life, we may find it difficult to emotionally accept these events as good.

We tend to view life upside-down, presuming pain and frustration and unfairness as hindrances to spiritual growth. Yet in truth, life in this world is quite the opposite; each experience tailor-made for our soul’s repair.

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:

Watch a toddler learning to walk. Notice how the toddler falls and gets up over and over again in order to become independent. Compare this to the natural ups and downs of your own personal growth. Consider how life is founded on constant movement. The main thing is to never give up but to keep trying with faith.

A World of Opportunities

Do not be discouraged if you struggle to find the right words to express what you are feeling. G-d hears our silence and knows the intentions of our heart. Every effort is noticed and treasured by G-d. Every heartfelt thought and sigh is precious. Each attempt to connect to Him sheds another layer, bringing us closer to personal redemption and emotional wellbeing.

In the next world after 120 years, we will not be held responsible for the emotional and spiritual battles we faced. Rather, our response and reaction to such battles will be investigated. In other words, it is not a matter of whether we battled, but rather what did we use to fight with, and how did we fight?

We will proudly be able to say we used the powerful weapon called prayer!

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:

Focus on an ongoing challenge that has presented itself to you in various forms and ways throughout your life. Remind yourself that G-d is presenting you with these opportunities to give you the chance to change and fulfil your life’s purpose – see your situation from this angle. Embrace this Heavenly opportunity.

What can we practically do to help ourselves overcome our challenges? Prayer. We can employ heartfelt yearning for help from our Creator Who designed our life exactly as it is meant to be. True, heartfelt prayer includes honesty and openness about your struggles. Though G-d knows everything already, it is essential that we put our prayers into words. This act in itself elevates the prayers and gives them heightened power and spirituality.

After we genuinely and consistently ask for heavenly help and guidance, we can rest assured that no matter what the outcome, it will be for our ultimate best

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:

Use your prayer time today to just simply ’empty out’ your difficulties in front of G-d Who set them up for you in the first place.

Your Other Side

Since our souls yearn to have free choice, they actually want to be challenged in this lifetime because they knows that it is only the existence of the evil inclination which makes this free choice real and meaningful. Our evil inclination is part of our DNA make-up in this world.

It tries to make it difficult to see G-d through our life’s experiences. G-d gives us the evil inclination as a strengthening coach and emuna builder as an answer to our soul’s yearning for free choice. As such, our evil inclination is part of us and is actually our ticket to our free will.

Feel & Heal Exercise of the day:

Think about one way your evil inclination may actually be serving your personal growth and development.

Greater Good

Before our soul descended into this realm, we were shown our entire life’s events. We saw the identity of our parents, our siblings, the neighborhood, our physical attributes, financial standing, emotional and physical health, sweet and sorrowful occurrences, our spouse, our children, etc.

Though it is possible to change ourselves spiritually and affect upon these circumstances (a subject beyond the scope of this lesson), these factors are generally out of our hands. We may ask: ‘Where is our level of creativity and free choice if everything is pre-ordained?’ G-d responds: ‘You can choose to see Me through all the circumstances of your life. The extent to which you do so is the extent to which you will attach yourself to Infinite wisdom, clarity and strength and thus become a co-partner in Creation.’

Feel & Heal exercise:

How stuck are we in thinking that we are victims of life’s circumstances? How ready are we to adapt our emuna viewpoint that G-d is the One who brought upon the circumstances in order to guide us to greater good.

G-dly Talent

Increasing our emuna helps our ears listen to the Bat Kol once again. This Divine message redirects us back to our true path, where we will receive boundless strength and protection again.

When we travel on this path, we are buoyed with the joy of knowing we are on our G-d-given mission to build, develop and become. Consequently, our negative emotions – of fear, anxiety, anger, frustration, sadness – are minimized.

Feel & Heal exercise:

Ask yourself what is my mission in life? One way of zooming into your mission is by exploring your G-d given talent. Your talents were deposited by G-d for you to use to shine your light in this world. Make a commitment to embrace them.

Sidetracked

Difficulties may arise if we stray from our calling and become sidetracked from our true mission. The literal translation of the Hebrew word for sin, cheit, means ‘missing the target’. Transgressions are indications we have traveled away from our worldly assignment. We are then left vulnerable to negative influences and feeling unprotected.

The protective outpouring of Divine energy is thus blocked, hidden under layers of personal desires and distractions. This deviation may lead us to feel lost, confused or lethargic.

Feel & Heal exercise:

Contemplate the blockages in your life and try to connect the dots between the blockages you are experiencing and what the underlying Divine message may be in those hindrances.
